In 2002, the first phase of the development saw the opening of the Mark O’Meara course. This gorgeous parkland spread makes splendid use of the historic demesne’s rolling hills, specimen trees and the River Rye. Feature holes include the 13th, 14th and 15th – a pair of 3’s wrapped around a heroic par 5 – crossing the lazy loops of the River Rye. Quite different yet complimentary to The O’Meara, is The Montgomerie, opened in June 2003. This magnificent new course is Montgomerie’s second course design – his first in Ireland and the UK. He expressed his delight with the course, “This is a unique project and I am privileged to be associated with it. You can’t call it a links course, but it plays like a links and has all the characteristics of a links. In designing this course, I attempted to go back to a more traditional course”. This magnificent course was home to the 2013 Irish Open most recently among other prestigious Opens and Tournaments over the years. Carton House will also be the venue for All Ireland Cups & Shields in 2017. It was also winner of the 2004 Best New Design Award in Golf World Magazine and was ranked in the top 10 courses by US Golfers Digest Magazine.
The Montgomerie, has everything that encourages strategic play that helps to make golf so fascinating. At full stretch – 7,300 yards – this links style creation is championship stuff.
