GOLF TRAVEL BOUNCES BACK QUICKER THAN MOST OTHER TOURISM INDUSTRY SECTORS

The golf tourism industry has survived the volcanic ash crisis, financial crisis, security-related incidents, H1N1 and will now prepare to combat the current Covid-19 virus. Tourist boards and golf tourism suppliers in areas affected by the coronavirus outbreak are being urged not to cut funding and to be prepared to invest money into promoting golf travel as soon as confidence returns to the market.

The recommendation comes from Peter Walton, Chief Executive of global golf tourism organisation IAGTO, which has just released its fifth annual golf tourism survey.

According to Walton, strong performances all around in 2019 and healthy forward bookings for 2020 “now have to be set against the cloud of the Covid-19 outbreak in China which has had an impact beyond its borders”.
He added: “While golf tourism is not immune to global or regional crises – be they economic, security, environmental or health by nature – we have seen over the past two decades that golf travel bounces back quicker than most other tourism industry sectors once the risk or fear has run its course.

Meanwhile, our travel writers have been busy. In this edition they review: Golf & Tourism in Daytona Beach, USA; Golf in Madeira, Portugal; Esbjerg Golf Club, Denmark; Corales Golf Club, Caribbean; and golf tours to Southern Africa & Mauritius.

Our CEO & Founder Dermot Synnott joined the golfscape Top100 global panel, who just released their Top100 golf courses for 2020, which are unveiled in this edition.

With golf course designs in 20 different countries, a winner of six majors and a net worth of $60 million, Jenna Heidstrom delves right into the design world created by Sir Nick Faldo. Andrew Haggar, lead architect at Faldo Design, gives us an exclusive insight into the man behind the award-winning design firm.
