CARNE – “COULD THERE BE A MORE EXPLOSIVE COURSE ON THE PLANET?”

DG IRELAND TOP150 – 2025

Editor, Kevin Markham

Could there be a more explosive course on the planet? Dunes rise almost 500 feet above sea level with deep troughs running in between and terrain that has no concept of the word ‘level’. It is hard to imagine any golf club offering the scale of adventure
you’ll experience at Carne.
It is breath-taking stuff… and while you might imagine that makes it a difficult course to play, it’s not. This is epic fun.
Carne’s 27 holes balance precariously on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and Blacksod Bay, at the farthest reaches of Co. Mayo. The original 18, designed by the legendary Eddie Hackett, opened for play in 1995. The new nine, designed by Ally McIntosh, opened
in 2013.
Holes follow the natural contours so every ounce of the terrain’s raw power is maintained. Hackett’s front nine are often described as being gentle… which would be like describing
the Grand Canyon as small… but the back nine and newer nine are where you’ll need a head for heights as they now form the preferred Wild Atlantic Dunes course. Home to the Irish PGA Championship 2021-2023.

FAVOURITE HOLE
The par four 6th hits from a high tee to a high green, with a
crevasse in between.
WHAT’S IN THE BAG?
Adrenaline and lots of it. Use those bump-and-run skills.
