Rathcore

The term hidden gem gets thrown around far too freely… but for Rathcore it’s a perfect description. This is a thrilling par 72 parkland in the Co. Meath countryside. For a modern course, opened 2004, it is just 6,555 yards from the back tees.Mel Flanagan designed Rathcore to be fun, challenging and exhilarating in equal measure. Over such interesting terrain he had the perfect canvas to work with. There are natural ponds, two gorse drenched hillocks, a fairy fort and holes that simply glide between, over and around them. It has settled in so well you’d think the course has been here for decades.
One of Rathcore’s greatest strengths is its variety. The par four Index 1 8th (465 yards, back tees) precedes the 311 yard 7th. A driver is required for the first but a liability on the second. Water threatens constantly so you have to think your way around. And in the 11th and 16th, the club has two of the best par threes in the country.
Favourite Hole: the par three 11th drops from a hillock to a green surrounded on three sides by water and protected by a big tree on the fourth. Pinpoint accuracy required.
What’s in the Bag? Brains over brawn. Stand on the tee and work it out.
