Palmares Set For Golden Future After Celebrating Landmark Anniversary

Mullingar

Mullingar is an old and revered parkland, renowned for its annual Scratch Cup (won by many of the Irish greats)… and its par three 2nd hole. This is old school charm which dates back to 1894. The current course’s legacy, however, stems from 1937, when the legendary James Braid created the simplest of designs by planting tees to indicate the position of tee boxes and greens. Or so the story goes. Braid wanted the current 10th to be the 1st, but it was agreed that it was too tough a hole to start. When you play this par four 458 yard dogleg (Medal tee) you’ll understand why. This par 72 course received an upgrade by David Jones, between 2003 and 2005, which saw some new greens and bunkering, and a reorientation of three holes. Mullingar now plays two to three shots harder than before but, importantly, its Braid character remains.
Heavy trees pour over bumpy terrain giving that all-embracing, mature setting and, while not a long course (6,412 yards, Medal), the trees will wreak havoc on an errant driver.
Favourite Hole: the course is well known for its par threes but the 197 yard 2nd is a stiff challenge so early in a round. Tee and green are raised and only a perfect tee shot will do.
What’s in the Bag? Try to leave that fade or draw at home.
