Nature, Luxury and Vision at Portugal’s Espiche Golf Club

Nestled in the rolling countryside near Lagos in Portugal’s Western Algarve, Espiche Golf has established itself as one of Europe’s most distinctive modern golf destinations. Combining world-class golf with an unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility, the club offers players an experience that is as much about nature and tranquillity as it is about the game itself.

Located just minutes from the historic coastal city of Lagos, Espiche Golf enjoys a peaceful setting within a protected natural landscape. Unlike many resort-style golf developments, the club was conceived with a philosophy centred on preservation rather than transformation. The result is a course that feels organically connected to its surroundings, blending seamlessly into the Algarve’s rugged terrain and indigenous vegetation.

Designed by renowned South African golf architect Peter Sauerman, the 18-hole, par-72 course challenges golfers with strategic bunkering, rolling fairways and carefully positioned greens. Opened in 2012, the course was intentionally created to work with the contours of the land rather than against them, preserving native flora and fauna throughout the property. Golfers are rewarded not only with a memorable round, but also with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and nature reserve.

A major highlight of the resort is its award-winning clubhouse, which has earned international recognition for both its architecture and environmental efficiency. Perched on a hilltop overlooking the course, the clubhouse combines contemporary design with natural materials and panoramic glass walls that maximise natural light and stunning views. Home to the popular Gecko Restaurant, the venue has become a destination in its own right, offering seasonal cuisine inspired by local produce and a relaxed yet refined atmosphere. The clubhouse was awarded third place in Golf Inc. Magazine’s prestigious Worldwide Clubhouse of the Year awards, making it one of the most celebrated golf clubhouses outside the United States.

Sustainability remains at the heart of everything Espiche Golf does. Water conservation, eco-sensitive landscaping and energy-efficient infrastructure have all been integrated into the development from the outset. The club’s management has consistently promoted the idea that golf and environmental stewardship can coexist harmoniously, helping preserve the Algarve’s unique ecosystem for future generations.

Looking ahead, Espiche Golf is preparing for an exciting new chapter with plans for an eco-boutique hotel and low-density residential village adjacent to the course. The future development will include luxury villas, townhouses and a sustainable hotel featuring spa facilities, pools, conference spaces and landscaped communal areas. Importantly, the expansion will continue the club’s environmentally conscious philosophy, with green roofs, solar energy systems and carefully planned open spaces designed to maintain the natural beauty of the site.
