Dordogne’s “Petit Versailles” emerges as one of Europe’s must-visit luxury escapes for summer 2026

Château des Vigiers in southwest France is stepping into the spotlight as one of as one of Europe’s standout countryside retreats for summer 2026, offering space, heritage and Michelin-starred dining away from the crowds of more traditional coastal destinations.

Set within 150 hectares of vineyards, lakes and ancient parkland between Bergerac and Saint-Émilion, the 16th-century estate – often dubbed the “Petit Versailles – is increasingly capturing the attention of international travellers seeking a refined alternative to the Riviera and Tuscany.

With summer travel trends leaning towards nature-led escapes and experiential stays, Château des Vigiers offers 65 elegant rooms and suites across the historic château and contemporary Relais alongside three nine-hole golf courses and a spa designed for relaxed, extended stays.

At its culinary core, Michelin-starred restaurant Les Fresques continues to elevate the destination’s appeal with seasonal menus inspired by the Dordogne’s local produce and culinary traditions. Guests can also dine more casually at the estate’s brasserie, while curated wine experiences highlight the surrounding vineyards of one of France’s most celebrated wine regions

Beyond the estate, Dordogne offers a cultural calendar that further enhances its appeal as a summer destination. The region has already welcomed the Tour de France on multiple occasions, showcasing the landscapes of the Périgord, and a full stage through the area—particularly around Bergerac and Périgueux—is planned for 2026, expected to draw international attention and large numbers of spectators.

History comes to life each summer with the renowned re-enactment of the Battle of Castillon (1453), the decisive final battle of the Hundred Years’ War between France and England. Famous for its pioneering use of French artillery, the event is now celebrated through an immersive open-air historical performance that attracts visitors from across Europe.

Seasonal festivities continue with Bastille Day on July 14th, when villages across Dordogne come alive with fireworks, dancing, and communal celebrations. In destinations such as Castillon-la-Bataille, locals and visitors gather for shared meals, games, and evening entertainment.

The region’s much-loved gourmet and night markets bring villages to life throughout the summer months. Offering local produce, regional specialities, and live music, these markets provide an authentic taste of Dordogne’s culinary heritage and a relaxed, sociable experience for visitors.

This renewed momentum is supported by the strategic vision of Onyria Group, whose involvement is amplifying the château’s international visibility while safeguarding its heritage and sense of place.

“Travellers are increasingly looking beyond the obvious summer destinations,” said Niels Koetsier, General Manager of Château des Vigiers. “Here, they find space, authenticity and a level of understated luxury that feels both timeless and relevant.”

João Pinto Coelho, Chief Commercial Officer of Onyria Group, added: “Château des Vigiers perfectly aligns with the shift towards meaningful luxury, where experiences are rooted in culture, landscape and genuine hospitality. It’s exactly the kind of destination that resonates with today’s European summer traveller.”

With its combination of heritage, gastronomy, open space and a rich calendar of cultural events, Château des Vigiers is uniquely positioned to feature in “best of Europe” summer round-ups—offering a sophisticated countryside alternative that balances escapism with accessibility.
