Celebrating 150 Years of Highland Golfing Heritage – Muir of Ord Golf Club

Nestled in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, Muir of Ord Golf Club stands as a timeless testament to golf’s enduring appeal. With origins dating back to 1875, this remarkable course has recently celebrated its 150th anniversary—a milestone that highlights both its rich heritage and its continued relevance in the modern game.

Set against a backdrop of breath-taking natural beauty, the course offers sweeping views of Ben Wyvis, the Beauly Firth, and the surrounding Highland landscape. Carved from a glacial plain of sand and gravel, Muir of Ord blends heathland and moorland terrain into a distinctive and memorable playing experience.

Central to the club’s identity is the influence of legendary Scottish golfer and architect James Braid. A five-time Open Champion and one of the most celebrated course designers in history, Braid was commissioned in the 1920s to expand the original nine-hole layout into a full 18-hole course. His vision transformed Muir of Ord into a strategic and sporting test, incorporating cleverly bunkered greens, natural contours, and a routing that remains largely intact today.

Braid’s design continues to challenge and delight golfers of all abilities. Tight fairways demand accuracy, while the course’s renowned par-3 holes—particularly the demanding 12th—offer moments of both beauty and intensity. The unique presence of a railway line running through the course adds an extra layer of character, making a round here unlike any other in Scotland.

The club’s 150th anniversary is more than just a celebration of longevity—it is a tribute to a living legacy. Over the decades, Muir of Ord has evolved while preserving the essence of Braid’s original design. Carefully managed improvements and enhancements have ensured that the course remains relevant, welcoming both local players and international visitors seeking an authentic Highland golf experience.

Beyond the fairways, the club is renowned for its warm hospitality. Visitors are greeted with a genuine Highland welcome, complemented by modern facilities and a vibrant clubhouse atmosphere. Whether enjoying a post-round meal or simply soaking in the panoramic scenery, guests quickly understand why Muir of Ord has earned a reputation as a hidden gem of Scottish golf.

As it moves into its next chapter, Muir of Ord Golf Club continues to honour its past while embracing the future. For golfers seeking history, challenge, and unforgettable scenery, this James Braid masterpiece remains a must-play destination—now proudly celebrating a century and a half of golfing excellence.
