Castro Marim Golf & Country Club – Golf in Portugal’s Eastern Algarve

Tucked away in the peaceful eastern Algarve, close to the Spanish border, Castro Marim Golfe & Country Club offers a wonderfully different Portuguese golf holiday. Set across a 230-hectare resort, the property enjoys an enviable position with views towards the Atlantic Ocean, the River Guadiana and the surrounding countryside.

For golfers looking for space, sunshine and plenty of variety, Castro Marim is an appealing base from which to explore one of Portugal’s most rewarding golf regions.

Stay Your Way

Accommodation is centred around spacious villas rather than conventional hotel rooms, making the resort particularly well suited to families, groups of friends and golfing parties. Two- and three-bedroom villas range from approximately 101m² to 113m², while superior three-bedroom villas extend to around 220m² and can include a private swimming pool and barbecue area. Villas feature fully equipped kitchens, air conditioning, balconies or patios, spa baths, Wi-Fi and living areas designed for relaxed self-catering.

For a golf group, having your own villa provides the freedom to enjoy breakfast before an early tee time, relax around the pool after golf and dine together in the evening.

The Clubhouse & Resort

The clubhouse provides a sociable hub before and after your round, with restaurant, bar and terrace facilities. The resort also offers a swimming pool, gym and sauna, playground and other leisure facilities, while the surrounding countryside provides excellent opportunities for walking and nature watching.

And then there is the golf.

Three Courses, Two 18-Hole Combinations

Castro Marim’s golf is built around three distinctive nine-hole loops: The Atlantic, The Guadiana and The Grouse. Designed by Bristol-based golf architect Terry Murray, the Atlantic and Guadiana opened in 2001, while the Grouse was added in 2008. The three loops allow golfers to play different 18-hole combinations, giving repeat visitors plenty of variety.

The Guadiana winds through attractive pine trees, with elevated tees, dogleg fairways and fast, true greens frequently protected by bunkers. The Atlantic shares many of these characteristics but introduces its own mix of water, elevation and strategic challenges. The Grouse, meanwhile, feels more open, with rolling terrain, fewer trees and expansive inland views. Wildlife is very much part of the experience, with birds, rabbits and wild boar regularly encountered around the courses.

One hole worth watching for on the Atlantic is the 6th, a par four where a lake guards the left side of the fairway, demanding accuracy from the tee. On the Guadiana, the 3rd brings water into play, adding an extra element of strategy to the opening nine.

Don’t Miss the Area

Golf is only part of the attraction. Make time to explore historic Castro Marim, dominated by its medieval castle and the 17th-century São Sebastião Fort. The nearby Sapal de Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Nature Reserve is a haven for birdlife and salt marshes, while the region’s traditional salt pans offer an insight into a centuries-old local industry.

The golden beaches around Praia Verde, Alagoa and Cabeço are also well worth a visit, while a trip to nearby Vila Real de Santo António adds riverside promenades, restaurants and easy access to the Guadiana.

For golfers seeking a relaxed Portuguese escape where great golf, comfortable villa accommodation, nature, beaches and authentic Algarve culture come together, Castro Marim Golf & Country Club deserves a place on the itinerary.
