Just east of Tavira, Benamor Golf offers something increasingly precious in modern golf: a beautiful course where the landscape, history and game take centre stage.
Set at Quinta de Benamor, just a few kilometres from the historic Algarve town of Tavira, Benamor Golf enjoys an enviable position between the hills of the Barrocal and the Atlantic Ocean. The views are spectacular, but perhaps its greatest attraction is the sense of tranquillity. Unlike many Algarve developments, Benamor sits in peaceful, largely construction-free surroundings, allowing the natural landscape to frame the golfing experience.
The course was completed in 2000, following an original concept by the legendary Sir Henry Cotton. Cotton was inspired by the spectacular setting and the old church beside what is now the clubhouse. His vision resulted in an 18-hole, par-71 layout of around 5,500 metres, designed to provide an enjoyable challenge for golfers of differing abilities.
Benamor’s character comes from its natural surroundings. Ancient olive, cork, carob, fig and almond trees are incorporated into the layout, while strategically positioned bunkers and water hazards demand thought rather than simply power. The course is undulating rather than severely hilly, making it an enjoyable walk while still offering plenty of variety.
A memorable finish
There are several holes that deserve attention, but the 18th is the standout. A par five stretching to 512 metres from the white tees, it is officially described by Benamor as probably the best hole on the course. Out of bounds runs along both sides from tee to green, while mature trees complicate the fairway and force players to think carefully about every shot. Reach the green safely and a par feels like a genuinely satisfying conclusion to the round.
The practice facilities are equally impressive. The driving range features 16 hitting mats, grass practice areas with target flags and distance markers, plus a chipping and pitching green with a bunker. A nine-hole putting green sits between the clubhouse and range, with another putting area beside the first tee for a final warm-up. Lessons are also available for players looking to sharpen their game.
After golf, the clubhouse provides everything needed to complete the experience, including reception, pro shop, equipment hire, changing facilities and a relaxed bar and restaurant serving snacks, light meals and chef’s suggestions.
A date for the diary
Benamor will also host the Scandinavian Vini Cup Tournament 2026 by Companhia dos Vinhos do Douro on 14 November 2026. Played in Texas Scramble format and open to the general public with an official handicap, the event combines golf with Portuguese gastronomy and wines from Companhia dos Vinhos do Douro. It is a fitting celebration of the growing connection between Benamor and Scandinavian golfers.

It offers history without feeling old-fashioned, challenge without unnecessary severity, and scenery without sacrificing the quality of the golf.
