GOLF COURSES REOPEN FOR PLAY

The first half of the year has presented the golf industry with an unprecedented challenge. The CV-19 situation has affected everyone, however we have been overwhelmed by the resilience of golf clubs, with many restarting operations and getting back on track. Golfers nationwide are gradually getting back to play their home course, and most are also seeing a return to competitive golf.

It’s fair to say that domestic tourism will play a lead role in most destinations this summer, but tourist boards and golf tourism suppliers have been preparing to welcome travelling golfers for the busy third and fourth quarter golfing seasons. New measures have been put in place according to Government guidelines to ensure a safe golfing holiday.

In fact, many tour operators have seen an increase in bookings for this period, as groups rescheduled on top of existing bookings.

In this issue we our Southern Africa Editor, John Cockayne, reminds us of the uniqueness of booking a golf holiday in South Africa – even if it’s next year! It’s fair to say that South Africa is a treasure chest of dramatic scenery, from lofty mountains to sun-baked deserts and dramatic coastlines washed by the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The Western Cape offers courses like Fancourt, St Francis Links or Pearl Valley. But other regions also offer excellent golfing options, like Olivewood in the Eastern Cape, Royal Johannesburg & Kensington in Gauteng, or Pecanwood in the North West.

John’s “Letters from Africa” feature also gives us an update on how Southern Africa has been surviving across the last few months.

Our US based travel correspondent Tim Cotroneo takes a look at the beautiful Ocean Club Golf Course on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. The Ocean Club delivers non-stop landscape visuals, only in the Caribbean back stories, and an upscale island vibe that is pure Bahamian.

We hope you enjoy reading our golf guide.
