Few golf courses capture the drama and natural beauty of Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast quite like the Strand Course at Portstewart Golf Club. Founded in 1894, Portstewart is home to three true links courses, but the Strand is undoubtedly the club’s jewel: a championship layout combining towering dunes, sweeping coastal views, testing greens and the ever-present influence of the Atlantic.
The course hosted the 2017 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, where Jon Rahm claimed his first Irish Open title. Rahm’s verdict on the setting was unequivocal, describing the course as “one of the most beautiful golf courses I have ever seen”.
A Course Shaped by Golfing Greats
The Strand’s history is as fascinating as its landscape. The original Strand layout was associated with Willie Park Jr., the two-time Open Champion and renowned golf-course architect. Park’s work helped establish the character of the links, while the modern Strand was transformed in the late 1980s and early 1990s when Portstewart acquired the spectacular duneland of Thistly Hollow.
Club member and local schoolteacher Des Giffin designed seven new holes through this dramatic terrain, creating the spectacular section that now forms the heart of the opening nine. The result is a course with a distinctive blend of historic links architecture and bold modern duneland golf.

Holes You Won’t Forget
The 1st hole, Tubber Patrick, provides one of the most memorable starts in links golf. From an elevated tee, golfers look across the dunes towards the beach and Atlantic before beginning the descent towards the fairway. It is an opening tee shot that immediately communicates the scale and beauty of Portstewart.
The 4th, Thistly Hollow, is another standout. This par five winds through the dunes and demands both strategy and commitment. Then comes the 6th, Five Penny Piece, a short par three that proves that distance is not everything. Its elevated green and exposed position make club selection particularly challenging when the coastal wind gets involved.
The closing stretch also deserves attention. The final holes bring golfers back towards the clubhouse, with the 18th providing a suitably dramatic conclusion to a round that has travelled through some of the most impressive links terrain in Ireland.
More Than a Golf Course
The Portstewart Golf Club clubhouse provides the perfect place to unwind after your round, whether that means enjoying something to eat, having a drink or simply reflecting on the day’s golf. The club prides itself on welcoming everyone, from first-time visitors to elite golfers.
Portstewart Golf Club sits at 117 Strand Road in Portstewart, making it an ideal base for exploring the wider Causeway Coast.
What Not to Miss
Allow plenty of time to explore beyond the fairways. Portstewart Strand is an obvious stop, offering miles of spectacular golden beach and coastal scenery. A short drive along the coast brings you to Mussenden Temple, dramatically positioned above Downhill Beach, while the iconic Dunluce Castle provides another unforgettable glimpse into the region’s history.
For golfers, the proximity of Royal Portrush and other outstanding links courses makes the area one of the world’s great golf destinations. For everyone else, the combination of beaches, cliffs, historic sites and coastal landscapes makes the Causeway Coast worth exploring in its own right.
Ultimately, Portstewart Strand is about more than a scorecard. It is about experiencing genuine links golf in a remarkable natural setting—and discovering just how much influence Mother Nature can have on the game.
